What is Happening at KC Pet Project and How You Can Help

2021 will go down in the record books as one of the toughest years we’ve had at KC Pet Project. An entire year in a pandemic, people in our community experiencing economic, financial, and housing instability, a historic number of stray pets coming into our shelter, a kitten season unlike any other we’ve experienced, and staffing shortages have created an unprecedented strain on our resources, our team, and our volunteers. For the past few years, our shelter has taken in 10,000+ annually – this year, we’ll care for more than 13,000 pets.

Today, we have 1,100 pets in our care at KC Pet Project, including 402 dogs and cats in our main shelter, the KC Campus for Animal Care. Every kennel is full and we have dogs in wire pop-up kennels.   With this many dogs in our care, this creates an environment that is stressful for our animals and also for the people who have to care for them. Our canine care staff members often work past 9:00 PM each day to make sure all of the dogs get one last walk before going to bed. We’re working tirelessly to care for the homeless pets of Kansas City, MO, and we’re asking for our community’s help.

Adopt –

We have hundreds of available pets looking for homes right now at KC Pet Project. When you come to one of our adoption centers to adopt a new pet, our team is working as quickly as we can to help match you with a new best friend. With our staffing shortages, sometimes there can be a wait, but we are working as quickly as we can to help all the interested families who are looking to add a new member to their family.

Foster –

If you can open your hearts and homes to a pet in need, we are asking for your help to temporarily house a shelter dog or cat in your home. Our biggest need right now is for foster homes for large, adult dogs – many of which have been with KC Pet Project for 100 days or more. Sign up to foster today.

Come Work with Us –

KC Pet Project is hiring for a number of positions. Our organization offers competitive salaries, paid health insurance, a 401k, paid time off, discounts on pet supplies, and other great benefits. Make a difference in the lives of homeless pets at KC Pet Project and apply today.

Other Support –

Record numbers of animals arriving in need of care means our costs for operations has increased dramatically.

Donations go such a long way to help us sustain the care that we provide to pets in need. Become a Loyal Companion of KC Pet Project and provide a sustainable gift to our community’s pets. A gift of $12 a month can vaccinate 4 pets that come to our shelter to keep our community’s pets healthy. You can also donate in-kind items through our Amazon Smile charity wish list.

For nearly 10 years, our community has supported us from our humble beginnings at the old KCMO shelter on Raytown Road, to our beautiful new KC Campus for Animal Care. As we look to our 10-year anniversary, we continue to ask for your support as we work to find new homes for pets in need, keep more families together, and provide sheltering and animal services support for this city that we all love and its pets.
