Community Cats

What Are Community Cats?

Community cats are defined as unowned cats who live outdoors in virtually every landscape on every continent where people live. These cats are also known as feral, stray, or alley cats, and are generally not socialized, or friendly and able to live indoors, with people. They live full, healthy lives with their feline families (called colonies) in their outdoor homes. Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is the only humane, effective approach to community cats, and it helps them and the communities where they live.

Sterilizing/alteration (spaying and neutering) leads to a decreased risk of many forms of cancers, prevents unwanted litters, reduces or eliminates mating behaviors such as yowling, fighting, and spraying, and overall leads to healthier lives for the cats, as well as the community.

Trapping Certification

You can also become certified in trapping through Neighborhood Cats and Community Cats Podcast. They host virtual webinars regularly for a small fee that teaches you the in’s and out’s of successful trapping – please visit their website to sign up or for more details:

Important Note!

Never trap a cat without a plan in place first! Once you have a cat trapped, it can be very challenging to re-trap them if you do not have an appointment secured with a clinic of your choice first.

Coexisting With Community Cats

We understand that not everyone enjoys having cats live in or near their yards and homes. There are several humane deterrents to help encourage cats to stay away from your yard, cars, etc.

We do not and will not remove community cats from their outside home environments. Relocation of cats is considered inhumane and can lead to unnecessary suffering and death. Removing or relocating cats will also not reduce the amount of cats in that area, the only proven effective way is by providing the cats with TNR services to stop the cycles of reproduction.

KC Pet Project’s TNR Team

Our TNR team assists the community by providing TNR services to those who are physically or financially unable to do so themselves. We are able to assist community members in need thanks to generous donations, if you’d like to contribute to helping community cats in need please click here.

Our TNR team works in collaboration with our Pet Support team, Feline Intake team, and Admissions team to identify community members and colonies in need. We focus on larger colonies to aim to bring a reduction to overwhelming populations of community cats in condensed areas. Our team can not respond to urgent or emergent situations at this time and our wait-list for service assistance is currently full. If you would like to report a colony of community cats you are aware of or care for yourself please fill out our online form.
