KCCAC Features

54,000 square feet – nearly four times larger than the previous shelter.

Focused effort on “fear-free” housing with separation of species throughout the facility.

Music in all animal holding areas.

Administrative offices throughout the campus, an area for volunteers, break areas for staff.

Five laundry machines: two for dogs, one for cats, one for clinic, and one for the parvo ward.

Proper HVAC to decrease disease/odor and acoustical designs to decrease noise in animal holding areas.

Natural light exposure in almost all animal areas.

Outdoor play yards for dogs for adopter interactions, volunteer engagement, and daily playgroups.

A 600 square-foot retail store and gift shop.

Features an 8,000 square foot state-of-the-art veterinary clinic (coming soon for public services). Includes a large surgery suite, pre/post operation holding rooms for both shelter and public animals, a hospital/isolation wing for sick and injured pets, a small play yard for these pets so they can go outside, separate exam rooms for dogs and cats, and a beautiful lobby space for appointments. We plan to sell retail in the clinic in the future including flea/tick and heartworm preventative.

Separate entrances for Adoptions (south) and Admissions/Vet Clinic (north).

Outdoor “catios” for access to fresh air for our kitties, including one for cats with ringworm.

A Community Education Pavilion, with separate exterior entrance, for classes with the public, birthday parties, meetings, and other events.

The Roasterie at KCCAC coffee shop with exterior entrance to service all visitors to the campus, residents, and workers in Swope Park, as well as employees and volunteers at the shelter.

Indoor meet n’ greet rooms and play rooms for dogs and cats.

Amenities

  • Community Education Pavilion to host events, classes, birthday parties and more. This space can hold 40-80 people. We also have a catering kitchen for special events.
  • “PawTio” Event Deck off of the atrium with a fire pit
  • The Roasterie at KCCAC which is open 8am-6pm Monday-Saturday and 9am-5pm on Sundays. Window access to order when lobby is not open.
  • Retail pet store to purchase supplies for your newly adopted pet or the pets in your life. More KC Pet Project/Campus themed merchandise coming soon. 

Dog Districts

  • There are 9 Dog Districts at the Campus, 8 of which are accessible to the public.
  • We have the capacity to hold more than 250 dogs in this area.
  • 14,000 square feet of turfed play yards
  • Indoor meet n’ greet rooms
  • A large play room for dogs

Cat Adoption Center

  • There are five cat condo rooms and four free-roaming cat rooms. Three rooms have access to the Catios.
  • We have capacity for at least 70 cats in this area.
  • We’ve never had cat roaming rooms at our old shelter and are excited about this addition.
  • One cat room overlooks retail
  • Indoor meet n’ greet room

Funding

  • The Kansas City Campus for Animal Care is a public-private partnership between the City of Kansas City, Missouri and the Campus, and was built with support from GO KC bonds.
  • The total project budget was $26 million. $18M came from GO Bonds and the rest were raised through private donations.
  • Naming opportunities of the campus are still available.
