Animal Services Division Announces Winter Pet Safety Tips and Changes in Services During Storm

Kansas City, MO, February 1, 2022 – KC Pet Project, which operates the animal sheltering services for the city of Kansas City, MO, as well as animal control services through their Animal Services Division released the following tips for keeping your pets safe during the upcoming winter weather:

  • If your pet normally lives outdoors, please bring your pets inside for the duration of the storm and out of the elements.
  • Limit your pet’s time outdoors as much as you can. If they live in a doghouse, make sure that it is insulated and off the ground, that there is straw and dry bedding in the house to keep them warm, and that the door is covered and faced away from wind. Again, if they normally live outside, please bring your pets inside during the storm.
  • When you are walking your pet outside on salted roads and sidewalks, wipe their paws off when they come inside as most of the salts used are toxic to pets.
  • KC Pet Project also has online resources available for building shelters for community cats on their website.

KC Pet Project’s Animal Services Division will be operating at a limited capacity during the winter storm and responding to emergency calls only. If you are concerned about an animal during the storm, please dial 311 or send a concern form to the Animal Services Division. The team has been running resources to community members today to keep their pets safe and responding to as many calls as they can ahead of the storm.

KC Pet Project has established a Winter Preparedness Fund for supplies needed to give out to our community in the instances of winter weather and extreme heat in the summer months. Supplies that are needed now include large wire indoor crates, straw, heated dog bowls and more. With this fund, our organization will be able to purchase supplies needed to give to our community members to keep their pets safe during extreme weather. Some of these supplies can also be purchased at the shelter’s Amazon and Chewy Wish Lists. Donations can also be dropped off at any of the shelter’s locations.

Any other changes in business will be announced on KC Pet Project’s social media pages.
