2021 is coming to an end and what a year it has been. Here at the shelter, we typically see just over 10,000 animals annually but this year our intake numbers are likely to be somewhere between 12,000 – 13,000 pets! We have been at full capacity twice, used wired popup kennels for dogs when our installed kennels were occupied and received between 30 and 50 animals every day.
In our clinic we had a record 66 surgeries in one day, a record 11 traumas in one day, and over 20 parvo puppies in our care at one time. We also provided care to some extra incredible pets this year including Simon, the Shih Tzu shed 6.5 lbs of matted fur – the heaviest case of matting KC Pet Project has ever seen and Miles, the 178 lb Argentino Dogo – the largest dog we have ever had in our 9-year history- find new homes.
Our staff and volunteers are amazing and continue to step up by working long hours to make sure the animals are cared to our high standards for every day. There were many days the canine team would stay until 10:00 pm to make sure that every single dog in our crowded facility received a walk. Our feline fosters worked around the clock to care for and saved the lives of over 4,000 kittens who came to us this year.
This year we experienced many new “firsts” and broke a new record across nearly all departments. We are also preparing to celebrate KC Pet Project’s 10th Anniversary in 2022! But until then, we are focused on ending 2021 on a high note and need your help. As you consider your year-end contributions, please think of KC Pet Project as we are navigating a 20% increase in animal needs from our community this year. We are grateful for you, all donors, supporters, and advocators in our community and across the country. Because of you, together, we can in an unpredictable year, step up for all animals and provide the care, love, and support they deserve.
P.S. Your support ensures KC Pet Project can offer love and medical care to homeless pets that otherwise might have little hope in the new year. Remember, donations to KC Pet Project postmarked by December 31, 2021 are tax deductible for this year.
