At-Home Service Projects

Learn more about service projects and things you can do at-home to help our pets.

Thank you for thinking of KC Pet Project as the place to donate your time.

We know that you have endless opportunities to volunteer within the Greater Kansas City area and we are thrilled that you are interested in supporting our organization and the lifesaving work we do.

We care for 15,000+ animals each year through our 14 locations in Missouri and Kansas to adopt out pets. While we work hard to find adoptable animals their next home, we also focus on progressive programs to help people keep their pets through lost and found services, our Keep ‘Em Together, KC program, and pet safety initiatives like microchipping, pet identification, and more.

At-Home Service Project Requirements & Qualifications

  • An active email address is required
  • Projects must be approved by, and coordinated with, KC Pet Project in advance

At-Home Service Projects

If you are an Eagle Scout in need of a project or if you are looking for a great community service project, we have some great opportunities for you to work with us at KC Pet Project!

Build Outdoor Animal Shelters

Dog houses and community cat houses are critical to our community outreach and engagement programs. Outdoor houses ensure animals have adequate shelter to protect them from the elements. If you would like to add additional bedding to the outdoor houses, please be sure to use straw and not hay. Straw helps retain heat and repel moisture.

Community Cat House Instructions

Alley Cat Allies has a lot of great resources on how to build outdoor community cat houses. And here’s a great video showing you how you can make community cat shelters. Make sure to use straw and not hay. Straw helps to retain heat and repel moisture. We distribute these, as needed, to members of our community.

Create Enrichment Tools and Treats

Enrichment is an important part of keeping shelter pets happy and healthy. Enrichment stimulates shelter pets both physically and mentally, and improves their quality-of-life while in our care.

Drag Leashes

Drag leashes are lightweight, durable and can easily and safely be left attached to a dog’s collar. These leashes are important tools for shelter staff and creates safe space between a handler and a pet. Drag leashes must be 6 feet long, and can be made out of paracord or nylon rope.

Kennel Cat Scratchers

Cardboard boxes are very satisfying for cats to scratch. A cat’s nails can sink into the material, which feels great, makes a pleasing sound, and leaves nice visible grooves!

Peanut Butter Cookies

“Peanut Butter Cookies” are very easy and fun to make. Just be sure not to use peanut butter that is sugar free or reduced fat. These varieties contain chemicals that can be harmful or even deadly to dogs.

Pup-sicles

These are tasty healthy treats for our dogs at the shelter! Feel free to be creative. You can use any frozen fruit or vegetable EXCEPT cherries, grapes or raisins, and fill the cups with your choice of broth, pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) or yogurt. Again, please do NOT use cherry, or sugar free yogurt as they may contain chemicals harmful or fatal to dogs.
