Frequently Asked Quesions

What is the Foster to Adopt program?

  • The Foster to Adopt program is a 2 week trial period to see if the dog you are interested in is a good fit for you and your home. You may make your decision any time during this 2 week trial if the dog is the right fit and come to finalize the adoption.
  • This program focuses on dogs that have been in the shelter for more than 30 days to help them find their forever home.

What is included in the Foster to Adopt Program?

  • We provide all supplies that you may need during the program including leash, collar, crate, food, bowls, toys, and 2 weeks of any medication the dog is currently on.
  • You have access to our Clinic and Behavior Team for any medical or behavioral concerns that you may have during your trial period.
  • Adoptions staff will do check-ins with you on days 1, 3, and 7 to see how things are going, help answer questions, and provide additional resources you may need.

What do I do when I have decided if I want to go forward with the adoption or not?

  • If you decide that the dog you have taken into the Foster to Adopt Program is the right fit for you, come in any time during your 2 week trial to finalize the adoption. All dogs participating in the Foster to Adopt Program are Fee Waived so you would not owe anything at time of adoption.
    • If you are a Kansas City, Missouri city resident, you will need to get a city license at adoption which is $12.
  • If you decide at any point that the dog is not a good fit, please contact the Canine Adoptions team by email or phone to coordinate bringing the dog back in.
  • Whether adopting or not, we ask all supplies be returned at the end of the trial period so we can reuse them for others.

What is considered an emergency?

  • An emergency can be one of the following 3 categories: medical, escape, or bite.
  • Contact the emergency number immediately if any of these 3 things happen.
  • A Medical emergency can be a severe injury (i.e. hit by car, a deep cut, etc.), a seizure or collapse, or eating something potentially dangerous (i.e. non-food item such as a toy, something with chemicals in it, etc.). If a medical concern is not potentially dangerous or life threatening to the dog, please submit a medical concern through our clinic.
  • If the dog you have gets away from you, contact us immediately. Some helpful information to provide includes last known location (cross streets) and direction of travel when last seen. Reach out with updates as able, including new location information or if the dog is reunited.
  • Report any bite that breaks skin as soon as possible. We will also ask for information about what happened leading up to the bite, what city it occurred in, and if you can send pictures of it to us.

What can I not do with the dog during the Foster to Adopt Program?

  • The Foster to Adopt Program is a time for you to see if the dog is a good fit for your regular routine. That said, there are a few things that we ask you not to do with the dog until after you have finalized the adoption paperwork.
    • No introducing the dog to other animals.
      • This means no dog parks, doggy day care, or boarding facilities.
      • Introductions with animals already in the home should be taken at a slow pace to help all animals adjust to the change. If the dog will not be living with the other animals, they should not be meeting the dog.
    • No professional grooming salons.
    • No Raw Food diet.
    • Do not give the dog away to anyone else.
