What an incredible August we had at KCPP!  We continued to receive more animals than ever before in our city’s history, and yet through your hard work and the support of our community, continued to save more lives and help more Kansas City residents and pets than ever before.  So far in 2022, we’ve already provided shelter and medical care for 10,179 dogs and cats!

Here are more notable stats from our August Impact Report:

  • We received or provided care for 1,412 new dogs and cats that arrived in August (602 dogs, 810 cats).  We also received a chicken, 10 guinea pigs, 1 lizard, 5 bearded dragons, and 4 rats. 
  • In August, 1,018 pets were adopted by new families (362 dogs, 641 cats, and 15 other pets). The number of pets being adopted monthly from KCPP is at the highest level in our 10-year history. 
  • We sent 215 dogs/puppies and 350 cats/kittens to foster homes last month!  So far in 2022, our feline foster homes have cared for nearly 1,800 underage kittens!
  • Our veterinary team performed 997 spay/neuter and specialty surgeries in August.  We provided emergency medical care to 80 seriously injured animals that arrived (poisoning, emaciated, fractured limbs, hit by vehicles, foreign body removals, tumor removals, heat stroke, etc.).  Be sure to catch the lifesaving stories our medical team shared this month in our report!
  • We provided spay/neuter and veterinary services for 97 community cats in August.  Our veterinary surgery/wellness services for community cats have increased by 76% in 2022.
  • 477 volunteers gave 4,020 hours of service to KCPP last month – the equivalent of 23 full-time employees!
  • Our Pet Care Assistance Program has provided $45,729.04 in financial assistance to 175 KCMO families with 207 pets already this year.
  • We’ve subsidized $108,742.00 in reclaim fees for 1,064 KCMO families with 1,285 pets over the last year.
  • An average of 167 shelter dogs participated in canine playgroups every day in August.
  • KC Magazine readers chose KC Pet Project as Best Nonprofit in their Best of Kansas City reader poll!
  • Our Campus Education Pavilion was busy every week with large numbers of scouts, students, children’s birthday parties, groups, and tours.
  • We achieved an incredible 95.8% save rate in August (95.7% dogs, 95.8% cats) and our Year-to-Date save rate for 2022 is still an impressive 96.5%, despite taking in the highest number of animals in our city’s history.
  • Don’t miss the heartwarming reunion stories of Beka and Sedona – a dog that we reunited with her family after she was missing for more than two years!
