KC Pet Project

Coronavirus Updates

KC Pet Project operates the KC Campus for Animal Care, the animal shelter for the city of Kansas City, MO.

We are an essential city service caring for the pets of our city and at this time we remain open for business.

We are adhering to all recommendations by the CDC and World Health Organization, and are regularly disinfecting and cleaning our public and back-of-house areas as well as putting protocols in place for social distancing and limiting the amount of people in our shelter spaces.

“The health and safety of our pets and the community is our top priority. According to the World Health Organization, there is ‘no evidence that companion animals or could spread coronavirus (COVID-19).’   As an open-intake municipal shelter, we must ensure lost pets can be reunited quickly with their families and that homeless pets from our community have an opportunity to find new families. It is critical, as we continue to admit animals in need of shelter, that we find immediate temporary or permanent placement for pets in our care to ensure we can maintain our lifesaving operations.

KC Pet Project adoption process

We currently have pets available for adoption at all of our locations and in foster homes. You do not need an appointment to come meet a pet.

We also offer a free pet listing service to families in Kansas City, MO, who are seeking new homes for their pets in order to avoid relinquishing their companion(s) to our shelter. View pets being rehomed here.

Once you arrive at the campus, you will be paired up with a team member to look at dogs or cats once staff is available to assist you. If you are interested in meeting a pet in a Foster Home, please email [email protected].

We frequently have adoption specials with reduced fees for our dogs, and we host our Waived Fee Wednesday promotion every Wednesday which features fee-waived dog adoptions on all dogs 20 pounds or more and 6 months of age and older. To see the most currently specials, follow us on Facebook. We also have a list of all of our dogs that are free to adopt any day that are on our Canine At-Risk List.

Our retail store is open during normal adoption hours and our coffee shop window is open daily at 7am (except Sundays at 9am).

If you are interested in placing an Early Bird Hold, you may visit the campus to place that hold.

Donations to our Foster Pet Pantry are also greatly appreciated at this time and you can even set up your own fundraising page to support this cause. All donations made go toward the purchase of supplies to provide to our foster families including food, litter, collars, etc.

Foster for KC Pet Project During this Time

We appreciate the outpouring of support from our community to foster at this time! We are so grateful to you all for wanting to help.

We would love for you to fill out the Foster Signup Forms, so that we have you in our database for fosters, as we will continue to have needs for the upcoming months. Again, we’re incredibly thankful for the support that we’ve received and the enthusiasm around fostering for our organization.

Questions and Answers

Q: CAN I VOLUNTEER AT YOUR LOCATIONS AT THIS TIME?

A: If you have not volunteered for our organization in the past, we cannot accept new volunteers at this time and due to high demand, it will be several months before we are able to accommodate new volunteers (as much as we wish we could!). Sign up to be a foster or help us by sharing our adoptable pets to help them find homes.

Q: WHY CAN’T I SURRENDER MY (HEALTHY) PET?

A: Right now, adoptions are down because people are avoiding being in public. More than 30% of our intake comes from owner surrenders. Those two things combined would mean a whole lot of pets coming in, but not going out into loving homes. We are trying our best to avoid overcrowding. We want to maintain space for the pets that need us. Please see our Surrendering a Pet page for resources and ideas to rehome your pet.

Q: WHY DO YOU NEED ME TO HOLD THIS STRAY PET?

That’s a great question. KC Pet Project is asking people who find friendly stray pets to consider fostering them until the shelter can resume normal operations. This could be around 4-6 weeks. Pets typically stay pretty close to home when they go missing, so fostering them where they are found helps get pets home much more quickly. The pets also avoid the stress of the shelter. Stray finders can take the pet to a vet clinic or to our locations to check for a microchip, file a found report, and hold the pet to give the owner time to locate it.

Q: ARE YOU STOPPING OPERATIONS? ARE YOU CLOSING?

A: No. The change will mostly impact the owner surrender appointments. About 30% of the pets who enter KC Pet Project are given up by their owners. We are asking owners who are not facing an immediate crisis to hold their pets for an extended period of time, and to surrender at a later date. For any pet owners who need to surrender immediately, we will still take their pets at their scheduled intake time.

Q: HOW CAN I HELP?

A: First of all, THANK YOU!

Foster: The shelter is also looking for around 200 “on call” emergency fosters, who can take home a pet if KC Pet Project reaches critical capacity. KC Pet Project will need fosters for all types of pets but housing for medium and large dogs and pets with medical issues will be most needed. KC Pet Project provides vet care, crates, supplies, and food. People can sign up to be an on-call emergency foster caregiver:
