Department: Operations
Reports to: Chief Administrative Officer
Supervises: Canine Care, Behavior and Training, Admissions, Intake and Lifesaving Departments

The Director of Canine Operations is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the animal shelter to include, but not be limited to, Admissions, Intake, Canine Care, Training and Behavior and Lifesaving departments and staff. Ensures that constant and humane care and treatment of animals is provided, at all times, as it relates to industry best practices. Ensures the upkeep, cleanliness and security of the kennel and adoption facilities are held to KC Pet Project standards. Provides a quality customer service experience for external and internal customers in accordance with organization’s mission, goals and philosophy.


  • Facilitate a culture that fosters teamwork and empowers growth through training, coaching, stability, support and collaboration to KC Pet Project team
  • Administer personnel-related tasks, including new hires, terminations, leave requests, rewarding and disciplining employees as well as periodic and annual evaluations in accordance with KC Pet Project policies
  • Maintain and promote an overall customer service environment that is designed to make successful “matches” between families and their new companion animals
  • Motivate and lead a high-performance management team; attract, recruit and retain required members of the operations management team
  • Assure staff is trained and coached to a level necessary to achieve departmental goals and industry best practices
  • Communicate effectively and positively with all staff, managers and volunteers
  • Facilitate conflict resolution among staff, volunteers/community service workers and customers; provide guidance to staff faced with difficult situations
  • Foster a success-oriented and accountable environment within the organization


  • Adhere to the departmental and organizational financial goals & industry best practices
  • Assist Executive Director by providing monthly reports and participating in the activity of strategic planning and development of departmental budgets. Ensures that operations is performing within budget
  • Attend managerial meetings and contribute to the organization’s objectives and mission
  • Perform opening and closing duties as needed
  • Attend professional association meetings and board meetings as requested


  • Communicate to appropriate KC Pet Project personnel, necessary facility and equipment repair and replacement needs per KC Pet Project standards and protocol
  • Review and recommend updates of SOPs as needed
  • Work closely with Veterinary team to ensure disease management and established protocols are being implemented and upheld
  • Work closely with Executive Director to review and monitor KC Pet Project programs and services for maximum efficiency and effectiveness to ensure departmental goals are met
  • Work closely with Executive Director to implement changes in organization, staffing, work processing and management information systems to increase efficiency and reduce administrative costs while ensuring compliance with operational objectives for legality, quality and cost effectiveness
  • Remain alert and aware of animal behavior and physical condition; report concerns to appropriate manager
  • Advise the Executive Director of challenges and issues that may affect the operation of the shelter and/or organization
  • Other duties as assigned


  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Minimum five years’ experience in a similar capacity in an animal shelter, veterinary hospital or clinic, desired
  • Proven leadership ability in managing multiple direct reports
  • Experience in oversight and management of inventory
  • Computer literate in a Windows environment
  • Ability to utilize effective problem solving/decision making skills
  • Proven ability to exercise independent judgment
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • A passionate advocate for and desire to work with animals
  • Knowledge of animal welfare in a shelter environment required
  • Must handle agency funds in accordance with established verbal and written agency guidelines
  • Valid MO or KS driver’s license or ability to obtain a valid MO or KS driver’s license and must be insurable by organization’s insurance company
  • Requires humane handling of animals and safe handling of cleaning supplies, chemicals and equipment in compliance with safety rules and according to MSDS rules
  • Ability to lift, pull or push up to 50 lbs. with reasonable accommodations

Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to hazards associated with infected animals and controlled substances; exposure to unpleasant odors and noises; exposure to bites, scratches and animal wastes; possible exposure to contagious diseases.
