Perform all job responsibilities associated with day-to-day operations of the KC Campus for Animal Care, including animal care, cash handling, retail merchandising, etc. Ensure the constant humane care and handling of all animals. Responsible for providing and maintaining excellent customer service in our pet adoption center and working as a team with other staff members and volunteers.

KC Pet Project Expectations of Employee

  • Represents the Kansas City Pet Project in a professional, polite and enthusiastic manner.
  • Provides welcoming service by greeting and assisting guests, and responding to guest inquiries to ensure excellent levels of customer service are maintained at all times, including in-person and telephone client service. Promote repeat business and word-of-mouth advertising through the building of excellent customer relations.
  • Educates potential adopters on responsible animal guardianship, animal care and local animal control ordinances.
  • Conducts animal adoption interviews and assists/educates new adopters on topics such as basic animal behavior, positive training methods, vaccinations, microchips and other medical information and paperwork that needs to be covered with clients.
  • Completes animal adoptions, ensuring all transaction paperwork and computer records are complete and accurate in PetPoint, and schedules animals for surgery or veterinary appointments as needed.
  • Solicits tax deductible financial donations from guests and assists with acknowledging and putting away in-kind donations.
  • Responsible for daily cash handling, credit card transactions, retail center merchandising, pricing, and inventory restocking and letting appropriate personnel know when inventory levels are low.
  • Responsible for actively engaging customers to increase donations and merchandise sales at our adoption center location and/or special events to help reach revenue goals and ensure new adopters have the necessary items they need for their new pets.
  • Identifies any animal health problems and refer to management for proper care and treatment.
  • Follows KCPP safety and cleanliness protocols and all health and security rules.
  • Follows disease control procedures and completes cleaning of public areas daily and ongoing throughout the day to decrease biological risks to humans and other animals.
  • Organize and maintain all materials necessary for adoptions of animals, including but not limited to applications, contracts, vaccination and rabies certificates, office supplies, and educational and promotional materials.
  • Believes in the mission of the KC Pet Project and understands the lifesaving relationship between the main shelter and this offsite adoption center.
  • Treats animals humanely, with love and concern both on and off the job, and transmit these values to others.
  • Adheres to all KCPP organizational policies and procedures.
  • Makes a good appearance, positive attitude, and have the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
  • Can lift up to 50 lbs. long periods of standing, bending, and intermittent exposure to high noise levels.
  • May be required to drive shelter’s vehicle in performance of shelter business.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

Work is performed at the main shelter location. Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, high noise levels, hazardous chemicals, and sharp objects. Able to lift up to 50 lb., long periods of standing, bending, stooping, reaching and animal handling and restraint in an animal shelter-type setting. Able to handle all sizes and activity levels of animals.

Performance Factors and Necessary Skills

Communication and Contact: Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing with superiors, colleagues and individuals inside and outside of KCPP, has tact and above average communication and customer service skills. Must be able to maintain confidentiality and must be able to convey a positive and professional image to the public and employees.

Attendance and Dependability

Must be able to report to work at the scheduled time; ensure the store is ready to open on time each day, can be depended on to complete work in a timely, accurate, and thorough manner and is conscientious about assignments.

Qualifications/Educational Background

  • 4 year college degree in a related field is preferred
  • At least one year of experience in a customer service/retail sales environment is required.
  • One year of experience in the care and handling of animals in a shelter, vet clinic, or boarding facility is highly desirable.
  • Any combination of training and experience which demonstrates successful marketing, sales or management expertise and the knowledge and skills necessary for this position.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and driving record acceptable to the KCPP insurance carrier.
